(she sits and plans are projected on the wall, she adjusts the focus and says) We have two houses. the main house; has three floors, it’s heated centrally, whenever heating is required. the library which is a single story building to the left of the front of the house, contains the ground source heat pump which supplies the background heating for the library and the house proper, they are really a single building, but we always think of them as separate. the hot water and additional heating is supplied from an electrical boiler, which is powered from mains electricity and the solar panels on the roof of the library. the systems are imperfect so that in the autumn and spring as the outside temperature oscillates a little, the house temperature is slightly unstable. sometimes the house freezes, sometimes it overheats. the front of the library building faces the south and is mostly covered by a living wall of green plants, with windows set high on the wall. […] at the northside, the rear of the building has a long green house attached to it, double glazed, slightly taller than the library building with a sloping glass roof, some of which opens to allow the hot air to rise. there are doors that open out onto the garden, there are some tropical plants, orange and lemon trees, a pond. double doors open from the house into the green house. this tropical utopia is separated from the reality outside by the glass and space. by the doorway there is a small circular pond which captures the excess water and contains a few creatures. the corridor between the library and the house has a glass roof, a tank for the goldfish, sometimes its raided by herons, ducks… evidently the fish were my mothers pets in Russia, this is a plan of the gardens, about half an acre, my parents have lived there for close to 30 years. we have a flat that occupies the top floor of a building in london, it used to be a warehouse, now its an office block. a company called hat has its main european office there. i have an office in the hat building in which i work in two days a week. when I’m not here. there is a roof garden and a greenhouse, conservatory really. i mostly stay there at the moment, as i can walk here from there. there are three bedrooms, three living rooms, one attached to the kitchen. one of the living rooms doubles as the library. there are always libraries in every place we and i have. the walls are white and grey, paintings and images give the place colour, there is a roof garden, herbs, bushes, mostly short lived plants, walls to the north, glass to west, south and east, a pond, no fish but a few insects… entrance by lift and stairs. solar panels on the roof. sealed water recover tanks tanks. filtration units. there is no escape from ideology, it’s everywhere.
