forgetting

I could write a book on Forgetting. It would be about space and time. I live on big, broad doses of Forgetting. I would like to say and vice-versa, but that would be untrue.. . Forgetting sends away, hides, misplaces, shelters from the light, shakes off so for instance of the tens of thousands of books I have read most are forgotten… nearly all the people I have ever met, forgotten. I could write a book on Forgetting. It would be about time. I live on big, broad doses of Forgetting. And vice-versa.Forgetting sends away, hides, misplaces, shelters from the light, shakes off. again: Of the tens of thousands of books I have read most are forgotten most…I could live a life based on Forgetting. It would be about language, space and time. I live on big, broad doses of Forgetting.

What I most need is a theory of forgetting. The forgetting in question here is an empirical and constructivist forgetting. It is a forgetting that involves both the minor ones of: misplacing your keys, forgetting the rarely used pin numbers and forgetting passwords, what you did on a particular day some days or weeks ago, though to the major ones of: a forgetting with a theoretical understanding rather than from observation or experience. Forgetting is a return to finitude. In Difference and Repetition, Deleuze argues that philosophy needs to free itself from the idea that the greatest danger of thought is error. “It is noteworthy that the dogmatic image, for its part, recognizes only error as a possible misadventure of thought, and reduces everything to the form of error…there are facts with regard to error, but which facts? ” (DR, 148).

Forgetting follows a molecular line of substitution — An lexample. You sit down to play a game of go and discover, much to your amusement that , you have insufficent red stones. You start using coins and buttons (and then cut up pieces of out of date credit cards) instead of the red pieces. This works because it is not the materiality of the pieces that gives them their role and function in the game of go. It is their position in a semiotic system of differential relations that defines what they are. As we can see anything can serve the function of a red counter as long as it can be distinguished from the other pieces. This works until your opponent runs out of white counters because then you start forgetting whether that button is red or white. Because the new counters disrupt the relations, which they always will.

I could write a book about forgetting, it would be about discourse, language, space and time. I live on big broad does of Forgetting…
